About Us

Committee with visitors from East Timor

The Friends of Baguia is a community group that was formed to foster friendship, support and cross-cultural exchange at a grassroots level with the people of Baguia and support development opportunities in that community. A friendship agreement is a formal agreement normally between Local Governments and communities in East Timor. The friendship agreement with the Sub-district of Baguia in Timor-Leste (East Timor) was endorsed by a City of Stonnington Council resolution in September 2004. A five-year MOU was signed by both parties in July 2014.

Committee

All positions in the Committee are voluntary and the City of Stonnington provides some administrative support to the group.

The Friends of Baguia President makes annual visits to Baguia to facilitate links with the community of Baguia and work with the people there to identify suitable projects for Friends of Baguia to support. Other Committee members have also made multiple visits to Baguia. All these trips have been self-funded, and are partly necessitated due to the lack of normal communication channels. There is no postal service, and mobile phone service only commenced in July 2011!

Meetings

The Committee holds meetings every second month on the third Wednesday of the month. However, these dates may sometimes be changed. Everyone is welcome to attend meetings. Please confirm the date and advise your attendance with the City of Stonnington Liaison Officer.
